PERFORMANCE HABITS
Elite Programme

“Big changes don’t come from big decisions. They come from small actions done often.”

What is it?

Performance Habits is a six-week mental fitness programme designed for elite footballers. It offers a simple, confidential way to build routines, strengthen focus, and stay resilient — helping players stay sharp, handle pressure, and perform at their best on and off the pitch.

how does it work?

Performance Habits is built on the clinically proven principles of Behavioural Activation (BA), a practical and action-focused approach to mental wellbeing. BA works by helping players intentionally adopt positive behaviours and routines that ‘activate’ a more constructive mindset and emotional state. Through structured habit-building and goal-oriented actions, Performance Habits empowers players to take control of their mental wellbeing, fostering resilience and long-term positive change.

Top-level football brings constant pressure - competition for places, injuries, lifestyle changes, and uncertainty off the pitch. Staying mentally sharp is just as important as staying physically fit.

38% of players report feeling mentally off-track during the season (FIFPRO), but most don’t raise it, often because it doesn’t feel like something they can or should talk about.

Performance Habits is about staying steady - mentally fit, focused, and able to handle the demands of the game. It’s not about fixing problems; it’s about building habits that support your mindset, routines, and resilience, day in and day out.

PLAYER PERSPECTIVES

Image

Alex Cairns

First-team goalkeeper, Leeds Utd

“It can be a lonely place, sometimes being in your own head a little bit and not knowing what is right and what is wrong. When things aren’t going so well, you always need something to fall back on and I think them habits and being consistent, helps you mentally get through things a lot easier."

JOE SNOWDON

Academy scholar, Leeds Utd

"It is important to have something away from football if we need to get stuff off our chests. If it can make us stress free, we can focus on our performance rather than stressing on little things that might affect it. It is brilliant speaking to those that have been in our shoes and know what it feels like."

Jovanni Sterling

Former Leeds Utd & Rotherham Utd pro & Performance Habits Coach

"It is a way for the lads to keep themselves accountable, check in with themselves and focus on their habits and routines. It is a way for them to maximise their performances and their day-to-day lives, to become aware of what is working for them and what is not."
